Reading is a Skill

When children hear you read this allows for the children to have a model, in which to follow. While reading to your children, be sure to use lots of expression and variation in voice. While you are reading to them pause periodically ask questions about the story. Make predictions out loud about what might happen next in the story. Also ask your child, what do they think will happen next in the story.

Reading practice is needed in order to improve this skill. One way to track their progress as readers, is to listen to them read. Don’t leave it up to their teacher to inform you of their reading progress.

Children will ask for their favorite stories to be read, over and over again. This is a good thing because the repetition is needed. Make reading a priority.

During gift season consider books.  Put emphasis on a love for books.

Thanks for Reading,
I. Monae
