I cringe when I hear parents complain about the money they spend on school supplies. One year, I hunted for back-to-school sales weekly, throughout the summer. Now, depending on my mood in the summer, I buy school supplies in bulk before the school year starts or I buy as needed. Either way, as a classroom teacher we spend our money in the classroom.
The bottom line is, classroom teachers spend money out of their own pocket more than the general public realizes. I worked at one school in which the PTO set up an account. Each parent put in 25.00. Each classroom teacher had a 250.00 school year limit.
One PTO parent handled the teacher receipts. As teacher at that school; I felt appreciated by the PTO. As an educator, on many levels our efforts go unnoticed. This gesture from the PTO made me feel there was a level of respect and appreciation. If I had a “wish list” one thing I would add to it is a PTO managed fund for teachers, such as the one mentioned above.
I welcome questions. Let me know, if you have any.
